The region of Irkutsk is located in the southern part of Eastern Siberia in the upper basins of the Lower (Nizhnyaya) Tunguska, Angara, and Lena rivers.
The Eastern Siberian city of Irkutsk is one of the oldest and most attractive Siberian cities. It has a long and eventful history which reflects fully the history of Siberia. Siberia (meaning Sleeping Land) is a vast territory of this Russia.
The Republic of Buryatia (Buryatia) became part of Russia in the 17th century when pioneers came to Siberia in search of gold and furs. Having a population of 1,049,000 people and an area of 135,600 sq. miles, Buryatia stretches along the eastern shore of Lake Baikal and thus holds moring rights to the best beaches surrounding the lake. The republic’s economy is based on agriculture, timber, food industries and fur farming.
Olkhon is the largest island on the Baikal Lake. It has a steep eastern and gentle flat western shore line that runs into the Lake.
Lake Baikal is the pearl of Eastern Siberia. It is the world’s deepest and oldest lake. Approximately 25% of all fresh water on Earth is in the Lake Baikal.
The legendary Trans-Siberian Railway holds the vast territory of Siberia together. The actual length of the Trans-Siberian Railroad, (TransSib for short) from Moscow to Vladivostok is over 9,288 kilometers covering nearly all Eurasia.
